Research into band photography

The next step in order to get the progect up and running, I have decided to start researching and planning for our photography shoot. The photography will be placed either in a studio or on a green screen to get the best quality picture. As the photography will take up some time I have shown a few camera shots that I would like to use in the ancillary tasks. The ancillary tasks will a creation of a magazine advert promoting their new single 'For the first Time', not only creating a magazine advert I also be creating a digi-pack.

Here are some of the band photography that I researched. I have also pointed out the main codes and convention of band photography followng the 'Pop Rock' or 'Alternative Rock' genre.

The first band I researched was The Script

Other band photography I researched were Maroon 5, Neon Trees and Cold Play

Drafts for ancillary tasks - Album release adverts

Here are more scans of my drafts for the ancillary tasks, album release adverts. In the style guide I have explained what colour scheme and font styles that are going to be followed.

During my research of album release adverts there was a lot of real-media products that influenced my designs. I looked at not just only on Google Images for these but through print media such as:

Drafts for ancillary tasks - Digi Pack

The scans below are of my drafts that I created for the digipack. The drafts include a front cover, a back cover and a CD.

The font that we will be using for our body copy is the ‘Prestige Elite STD’ and the size will be appropriate to the product that is being created. The font that we will be using for the subheadings is ‘Prestige Elite Std’ again but use bold or italic. A size that is suitable to the product. The reason that we have chosen to use this font is because it is similar to the font style used on the logo, this means that the sense of a typewriter is followed throughout the project and becomes a convention of our band.
The colour scheme for the house style that we will be using across the project is black and white, this is because the colours contrast with each other and stand out more to the audience. The music is quite mellow and not a very upbeat song, the lyrics are about a couple just trying to make the relationship work. The colours represent the narrative. Black and white are contrasting colours, they show two sides to the story.
There was one digipack that really inspired me which was The Script. I like the way they have kept the colour scheme flkowing throughout and how they have included band shots but not only abstract images that represent 'togetherness' of linking hands and touching.

Three Evaluation of Album Adverts

I picked three adverts that I was going to look at and then identify the typical conventions that are featured on an album advert which you may see in a magazine or billboard. The adverts could be any size and any shape but always appear to feature the same aspects.

Here is a list of conventions I managed to identify:
  • Album artwork
  • Band/artist name
  • Album name
  • Album release date
  • Ratings
  • Reviews/quotes
  • Featured Singles
  • Where to buy it/download it
  • Price
  • Achievement
  • Logos
  • Website
  • Record label
  • Tour dates

Three Evaluations of Digi-Packs

The images below is my research of digi-packs. I looked at the front cover, the back, the CD and inside of the booklet. By looking at a range of these would help me grasp ideas of how I was going to create my ancillary tasks. I am also going to identify some of the codes and conventions of a digi-pack so my ancillary tasks will look professional.

Wording

Title-The cover of the digipak will include a title - both the artist and the album name. This will provide the audience with vital information.

Track numbers and name- These are vital on any album no matter what the genre. They provide the audience with important information for the tracks and the name. If this information was not provided then it would make it very hard to access particular songs/tracks.

Image

Front Cover-Majority of the time the album will have a main image on the front - this can be a hand drawn image, animation or a photographed image. This is one of the main conventions to any cover of an album as it portrays the artist and/or the genre of music the CD includes. Some audiences may typically pick up and album because it looks pretty or because they recognize the artist on the front - it is the first thing the audience sees therefore is a vital part of and digipak or CD package.

Interior- The insides of the digipak may also an image, however there are normally a variety of multiple images, one main image, or a logo for the artist. The insides of Digipaks don't always need to include images - they can include song lyrics, membership card, artist information - these making the Digipaks unique and interesting.

CD- The CD itself may also have an image on, from art work to patterns to pictures there is many ways to make the CD look interesting. More than likely the CD will have the artists name or the name of the album on - just incase the owner looses the packaging, they will still know what CD it is!

Although there are many more typical conventions found on a digipak/CD cover, image and the wording are the main conventions seen. Other aspects make up these such as style, color and positioning which will all influence the audiences views and genre on the specific product.

Some other conventions of a typical Digipak include;

-Barcode
-Price
-Institution logo
-CD compartment
-Special features (Lyric booklet)

Stroyboards - Planning - Outro

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the outro, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.

Storyboard - Planning - Chorus 3

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the third chorus, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.

Storyboards - Planning - Second Chorus

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the second chorus, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.
